I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.

When I was in high school I flew to Houston, Texas with my then-BFF to visit her aunt. We went to this small museum and the rooms were full of these massive canvases, smeared and covered with color. In one room, there were several completely black canvases, that’s it. I remember thinking, “why is this on display? I could do that. Is this even art?” And then it hit me, that this is the point — these reactions and questions and emotions. Well, some of the point at least. At any rate, I do like Mark Rothko and hadn’t thought about that art museum for ages, thanks tumblr.
